Anointing the Sick

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick gives strength and support and can be administered to anyone struggling with an illness.

Who may Receive?

There are two groups of people who can receive the Anointing of the Sick:

1. Those at the point of Death- This is also known as Extreme Unction or the Last Rites and is the anointing at the time of death. This will involve anointing with oil, the reception of the Sacrament of Confession and the reception of Holy Communion.

2. Those who are sick but not to the point of Death- The sacrament Anointing of the Sick can also be administered to those who have a serious ilnness but not to the point of death.  This can be done at home, a hospital or institution, or in a church.

Anointing of the Sick can be administerd more than once, but will be determined at the discretion of the Priest.

Spiritual Healing

The healing that occurs in this sacrament of anointing is not necessarily physical healing. While we believe that physical healing can occur through the great power of God, the grace that is infused through this special sacrament is the reminder of the eternal presence of God in our human suffering.

He summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by twoThey anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. (Mark 6:7, 13)
